Where were you born?
Montreal, Quebec
Where are you living now?
Montreal, Quebec
Why did you start your blog?
I ate out a lot and my friends and family would always ask me for recommendations, so it was a way to just document the places I went that were notable.
How did you decide on your blog name?
I said it out loud once to someone complaining about their food and thought it had a certain “je ne sais quoi” and decided to use it.
What do you blog about?
Mainly restaurants and special feature posts that include local food related events.
What post are you most proud of and why?
I gathered a group of people to put the most popular of our famous Montreal smoked meat chops to a blind taste test to find a definitive “best”. It garnered lots of controversy both online and off.
Which post do you wish received more love and why?
Probably the same post of the smoked meat face-off; I mean, I received hate mail... and it was awesome. The criteria of the judging and the questionnaire the panel answered obviously weren’t scientific, but the results were surprising – made some panelists question their smoked meat loyalties. Montrealers are competitive, so it was difficult to name one “better” than the rest; this didn’t sit well with a lot of people who believed their favorite was the superior meat.
Which post’s success surprised you and why?
I wrote about this small mom and pop Thai restaurant situated in Little Italy. Their Pad Thai rocked my world and I made a big claim that I found “Montreal’s best Pad Thai.” The response was overwhelming, from people tweeting me from the restaurant as they ate the dish to the restaurant owners finding my review, emailing me saying they have never made so much Pad Thai before my post.
What is one (non-kitchen) gadget you can’t live without?
My iPhone!
What is one kitchen gadget you can’t live without?
It’s a tie between my Magic Bullet and the sliding thingie that cuts the plastic wrap on top of the box.
Favourite food, care to share a recipe?
Tough to say, I love all food equally. However I do have a special place in my heart for sushi, pizza, chips, cake, noodles, BBQ, cookies, Peking duck, burgers, pasta, dim sum, curry, tartar, Nutella, sandwiches, Korean short rib, pho, pancakes, poutine, smoked meat, crusty bread, foie gras… God, I love food.
What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?
My grandfather was one of the original merchants that established Montreal’s Chinatown… and also, I’m ridiculously good looking.
What makes your blog unique?
I would say my style of writing is what makes my blog unique; I’m bit crass, sarcastic, but insightful and I try to make the reading easy and fun. I take the time to try and relate to my readers by adding anecdotes of my personal and daily life into everything I write.
