Name: Loreto and Nicoletta

Blog name: SugarLoveSpices

Where were you born?

Loreto: Emonton, AB, Canada.

Nicoletta: Rome, Italy.

Where are you living now?

Loreto and Nicoletta: Mostly Edmonton, AB, Canada, sometimes Rome, Italy.

Why did you start your blog?

Loreto and Nicoletta: We were at a friends party talking about food and recipes as usual with passion, and some people there said we should start a food blog, so we did.

How did you decide on your blog name?

Loreto: Well, we were thinking of various names, and when we thought about what we do and our relationship with each other, SugarLoveSpices came up. Nicoletta being the sugar as she loves to bake and has a sweet tooth, and me being the spices as I love creating fusion dishes that are savory and use many spices. Love is what unites and fuels us.

What do you blog about?

Loreto and Nicoletta: We blog about our experiences with food, from developing creative tasteful recipes that we would enjoy eating, and also ventures to local farmers markets, cafes and restaurants, and places we have traveled to.

What post on your blog most encapsulates you and why?

Tomato Goat Cheese Tartlets. In many of our recipes, we share the kitchen, working as a team and in harmony. Here, we developed a recipe that has the colors and flavors we love. We were so happy with the result, the pictures looked great and the tartlets tasted awesome! Plus it reflects our No Waste belief: you can still make an awesome dish utilyzing seasonal ingredients, what you have in the fridge or freezer, and a pinch of creativity.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

Lasagna “Bianca” with Asparagus, Peas and Mushrooms. We wanted to show a little twist on a lasagna using seasonal vegetables and a bechamel sauce that was simple and easy to make and people would enjoy, as lasagna are usually popular, it didn't receive the success that we wanted.

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

Vegan Chocolate Pear Muffins. Most people's reaction to anything vegan is usually not with passion and the thought of a chocolate and pear muffin being vegan, may have had that stigma of really healthy and earthy. But it wasn’t like that at all, the minority is growing, and we were quite surprised.

What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?

Loreto: Time, working a full time job and trying to balance home life sometimes presents it difficulties.

Nicoletta: The time I spend on social media, it seems infinite, yet never enough; then lighting issue and having to work in a small space in the house; lastly, my perfectionism and self criticism getting in the way.

Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them? (include URLs).

Nicoletta: Smitten Kitchen, love that she always share easy to make, delicious, no fail recipes for everyday life. Orangette, love her writing style so much and she also tells a story through her pictures.

Loreto: Beaming Baker, Diversivore. I like beaming baker (Demeter) because she writes from a real life perspective with true emotion and experience, creating wonderful vegan recipes. Diversivore is a like a library of information on food and technique. I have learned a lot about different ingredients through Sean and I love his way of cooking  elegant and cutting edge.

Favourite food - care to share a recipe or a restaurant destination?

Loreto: For me I would have to say Risotto. It is intense in flavor and demands love and attention.  Seafood risotto would be my all time favorite, because it always reminds me of our first hours arriving in Italy spending that time in fish markets full of jewels of the sea.

Nicoletta: although I love sweets, I have to say Pizza is my all time favorite, especially Roman pizza with its thin crust and simple yet tasty toppings.

What are you working on next for your blog?

Loreto: I am going to review a book on chinese recipes and techniques, that I will create some recipes from, and do our first giveaway on our blog.

Nicoletta: Baking with berries and summer fruit before they are off season! And possibly attempting our first video.

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

Loreto: That I am a lover of the arts, love theater, concerts, art. Nicoletta and I volunteer at the Art Gallery of Alberta, here in Edmonton, which I have to say is an architectural wonder, and enjoy it tremendously, getting to see all the new exhibits. I also have a passion for musical instruments and love spending time in the music room getting lost in playing music.

Nicoletta: I love reading, taking pictures, painting watercolors and coloring, it relaxes me, kind of like when I bake. I adore cats, the seaside, and the soft light at dusk.

What makes your blog unique?

Loreto: It is a unique blog because it is a reflection of who Nicoletta and I are, written and expressed in an authenticity which is truly us. Our passions, beliefs, experiences, origins, and memories. Who we are is what we do.
