FBC Featured Member: Claire Tansey's Kitchen

Name: Claire Tansey

Blog name: Claire Tansey’s Kitchen

Where were you born? Montreal

Where are you living now? Toronto

Why did you start your blog?

When I started my own business I wanted it to have a beautiful digital home that shows off a little of what I do.

How did you decide on your blog name?

I had a million ideas of cute, funny or punny names but then I fell back on my journalism mentor’s mantra: just say what it is. The recipes, photos and opinions all come straight from my kitchen. Also, I love a welcoming kitchen – it’s where all the joy, sadness and yum in life is shared.

What do you blog about?

Mostly about recipes I’m working on, or my upcoming classes and TV appearances. I’m really opinionated about food and cooking though, and most of my posts allow me a minute to step up onto my soapbox!

What post on your blog most encapsulates you and why?

After so many years developing, testing and editing recipes for magazines and websites, I’m a cookbook junkie. That said, there are a few that have truly shaped my philosophy and my life - 12 Cookbooks Everyone Should Own.

Which post do you wish received more love and why?

My Plum Buckle recipe.  Fruit buckle is so easy, so delicious and so unknown. It’s really a dessert tragedy.

Which post’s success surprised you and why?

Strawberry Lime Muffins.  I thought I was alone in my struggle to find a great muffin recipe. Turns out I wasn’t!

What’s your biggest challenge as a blogger?

Photography. By the time a dish is ready I’m either too hungry to take time to shoot it, or it’s too dark (and I always prefer natural light on my food shots).

Share a couple of your favourite food blogs to read. Why do you like them?

Dinner With Julie: Julie is smart, funny and prolific, and when I need a good, easy and fun recipe I can always count on her.

Suresh Doss: Suresh has one of the best palates in the business. He knows food inside and out and he’s not shy with his opinions. Also his photography is phenomenal and always makes me so hungry.

David Lebovitz: I’m not alone in this, but I feel like David is my good friend! I’ve been reading his blog for years, and I just love his down-to-earth posts about life in Paris. Also, he’s magnificently smart and writes a mean recipe.

Cake Wrecks: Does this count? Whenever I need a laugh or an escape, I retreat to Cake Wrecks. Such good writing; such hilarious cakes.

Favourite food - care to share a recipe or a restaurant destination?

Steak – a big ribeye from a great butcher served with a baked potato swimming in butter and Caesar salad with a super-lemony, anchovy-loaded vinaigrette. And a large Manhattan.

What are you working on next for your blog?

Staying consistent while writing my book!

What else should we know about you that may or not be in your “About Me” page?

I adore Scotch. I’m already planning a milestone birthday trip to Scotland to hike and drink – it’s almost 10 years away.

What makes your blog unique?

Aren’t we all unique snowflakes?

I’ve got a million years of experience writing, developing, testing and editing recipes for magazines, so my recipes work. I hope…

What part of the FBC site do you find most useful?
