BCfresh is excited to bring bloggers in BC and Alberta the opportunity to join their "Be Fresh" Recipe Challenge 2012 for their New Nugget (Warba) potatoes.  Create a recipe using these delicious little BCfresh gems, share it on your blog and submit it to BCfresh and you have an opportunity to win some great prizes!

This is celebrating local spring produce at it's best so get out to your local grocery store or produce market and find this distinctive heirloom nugget variety and get creative!

What is the contest timing? When does the contest run?

The BCfresh “Be Fresh” Recipe Challenge June 11th, 2012 and ends July 8th, 2012. Judging to select the finalists will take place between July 9, 2012 and July 13, 2012. The winner and finalists will be notified by July 20, 2012.

Who is eligible for the contest?

Unfortunately the challenge is only open to residents of British Columbia and Alberta as our New Nugget potatoes are so delicate they can’t travel too far. So, unless you have a way to get BCfresh New Nuggets you are missing out!  If you happen to find BCfresh nuggets in your neighborhood store outside of BC/AB, tell us where you purchased the product and we will validate if the store actually received product from our growers.

What is a Warba (aka BCfresh new nugget) potato?

As far as we know, BCfresh is one of the few companies to grow and ship Warba potatoes in commercial quantities.  This heirloom variety was bred in the late 1920’s as an early variety that produced a larger crop in a shorter time than typical varieties of the day.

While Warba may have fallen out of favour as a mainstream potato crop, it is prized as an early skinless variety with distinctive pink eyes and delicate flavour.  Here at BCfresh it signifies the beginning of our local season and the start of local British Columbia produce.  However you choose to prepare them, these popular and fresh-tasting nuggets are only here for a limited time!

Be sure to follow BCfresh on Facebook and Twitter to find when and where Warbas are shipping and when they'll be available.  You can already find them in Real Canadian Superstore, Save-On-Foods, Overwaitea, Thrifty Foods, IGA, Safeway and many other local BC/AB grocery stores!

They look great for making a potato salad, Steam till softened(not too soft) then cut into chunks. Cool then mix in mayonnaise and some herbs of choice if desired. A little sea salt and ground pepper might be needed though the mayo may already have that.
Sprinkle with some chopped, fresh herbs to serve.
Dead easy to make and healthy too

Excellent – I am all about promoting biodiversity and it is nice to see a larger organization doing this. I will see if I can find some here.
