Who hasn't sat outside on a beautiful summer day and enjoyed a slice of refreshing, sweet watermelon that makes the day even better? The red-and-green fruit is an always-present summer snack and we should definitely thank the fruit and vegetable gods for it.
Oh, sorry! You didn't know? Yup. Watermelon can be considered both a fruit or a vegetable.
On top of that, the flesh, the seeds and the rind can be used in sweet and savoury recipes. You'll see what we mean once you check out the gallery below. From deliciously healthy Watermelon Sweet Pizza to trendy Watermelon Mason Jar Salad, there are many innovative and yummy ways to enjoy the popular Citrullus lanatus.
If one of your goals this summer is to surprise your guests with creative recipes that keep them hydrated, then we would suggest that you run to your farmer's market and pick a delicious, 92%-filled-with-water watermelon.
How Do You Pick A Ripe Watermelon?
How to pick the right one, you ask? Easy peasy as 1, 2, 3!
- Look it over. Make sure it's firm, symmetrical and free from bruises, cuts or dents.
- Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy for it's size. Watermelon is 92% water, most of the weight is water.
- Turn it over. Check that the underside of the watermelon has a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun!
Once you've brought it back home, make sure you try one of the recipes below.
In a hurry? Just make it fun by cutting it with cookie cutters (for example, in the form of maple leaves), or use a knife and create grab-and-go spears, wedges, or cubes!
